Telegram News visited Wolverine’s “Muffins with Mom” Appreciation Day, an event honoring foster and adoptive mothers while strengthening the bond between families and the children in their care. Kids made handmade flower bouquets, did arts and crafts, and spent the morning with the mothers and caregivers who keep showing up for them.
Monica Burrell, Wolverine’s Director of Licensing and Placement Services, told the paper the day was designed so foster parents could do activities with the youth in their care alongside their own children. “It’s very important for children and parents that they can do activities together,” she said, “to be able to show them that it is a part of learning to be able to build a relationship with their foster parent.”
Foster and adoptive parent Latoya Robinson shared why she got licensed and what she tells others: “Every child needs a loving home, so I would say do it. I am such an advocate for it because you’re helping children come out of situations that even we don’t want to be in.”
The article notes that, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, nearly 10,000 children are currently in foster care across the state while the number of licensed foster homes has steadily declined, and highlights Wolverine’s Voluntary Foster Care and Independent Living programs for young adults who age out of care.
