  2. Residential Treatment

Treatment that meets a young person where they are.

Wolverine runs Michigan's largest private continuum of residential care for adolescents, ages 12 to 17, who have experienced abuse, neglect, or court involvement. Every program is anchored in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, on-site school, and a plan for going home.

Who we serve

Young men and young women ages 12 to 17, and boys as young as 6 in our Detroit shelter. Most are placed by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, juvenile courts, and Wayne County care management systems. We also accept private referrals.

What we treat

Behavioral health, substance use and co-occurring disorders, trauma, sexual offending, cognitive impairment, and the aftermath of abuse and neglect. Each program has its own admission grid, and every referral is reviewed case by case.

Where

Two campuses. Vassar, in the Thumb, is home to the Pioneer Work and Learn Center, Wolverine Growth and Recovery Center, Clarence Fischer Center, and Vassar House. Detroit’s Wolverine Center sits on the east side, minutes from families.

Programs by campus

Non-secure, homelike settings where young people learn the skills to return to their community. Average stays run three to fifteen months depending on the program and the plan.

The Wolverine difference

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy everywhere. Direct-care staff, not just clinicians, are trained through the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy, so treatment happens in the classroom and the gym, not only in session.
  • School on campus. Edgenuity credit recovery, GED preparation and testing, and online college courses.
  • Family therapy by a Master’s-level therapist, plus free transportation for families to every campus.
  • Permanency from day one. A permanency specialist works with each family on in-home services and post-placement support.
  • Alumni Opportunity. Graduates keep access to scholarships, counseling, and community resources.

Questions families and referral sources ask

How long are your programs?

Programs average three to fifteen months depending on the young person’s needs and the program type.

How do I know my child will be safe?

Each program serves a specific population, and a risk assessment is completed before any placement. Staff are trained in crisis prevention and management. Safety is the primary focus of every Wolverine program.

Do you have residential programs for girls?

Yes. Vassar House provides trauma-informed residential services for young women ages 12 to 17.

How do youth get placed?

Most young people are placed by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, juvenile courts, and Wayne County care management systems. We also accept private referrals, though we cannot currently accept insurance payments.

How much does it cost?

Each program has a separate daily rate established by the State of Michigan. Our intake team at (989) 823-3040 can share current rates.

Who is eligible?

Each program has an admission grid contracted and licensed through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Every referral is reviewed case by case. We serve both young men and young women.

Can family members visit?

Yes. Approved family members have scheduled visitation times, and we provide free transportation to our residential facilities for the families of our clients. Talk with your child’s treatment leader to schedule.

Is Wolverine licensed and accredited?

Yes. We are licensed by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of Child and Adult Licensing, and have been accredited by the Council on Accreditation for more than 20 years, including residential services, substance use disorder services, juvenile justice residential services, foster care, adoption, and specialized independent living.
