  3. Our Approach

Unconditional care, evidence-based practice.

Our approach is eclectic and founded on one premise: unconditional care. Around that center we have built a clinical model that runs through every hour of a young person's day.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, in every role

CBT is the most widely used and studied talk therapy in the world. Most agencies reserve it for the therapy hour. Wolverine trains every staff member who works with youth, from Master’s-level therapists to youth care workers, through the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy, the nonprofit founded by CBT’s originator, Dr. Aaron Beck.

That means the same language and the same skills show up in the classroom, on the basketball court, and at dinner. Young people practice recognizing thoughts, checking them against evidence, and choosing a different response, dozens of times a day.

Master’s-level therapists are also eligible for Wolverine’s internal CBT certification track with the Beck Institute and the Academy of Cognitive Therapy.

What a week looks like

  • School on campusEdgenuity credit recovery, GED preparation and testing, and online college courses, so a placement never costs a young person a semester.
  • Individual, group, and family therapyIndividual and group therapy from Master’s-level clinicians, group counseling, and family therapy, because home life is where recovery has to hold.
  • Medical and psychiatric careMedical services on campus, with contracted psychological and psychiatric services in our behavioral health programs.
  • Recreation and life skillsStructured recreation, work projects, and the Seven Principles, a pro-social skills framework unique to Wolverine programs.
  • Free family transportationWolverine provides free transportation to any residential campus for the families of our clients.
  • Permanency from day oneA permanency specialist or family worker is assigned to each young person’s family to provide in-home services and post-placement support.

A continuum, not a hand-off

Residential care, juvenile justice, and foster care overlap. Young people who move between them often experience the transitions as the most destabilizing part of their story.

Wolverine operates shelter and assessment, treatment, residential foster care, community-based foster care, adoption, and independent living. When a young person’s needs change, the plan changes with them and the people stay the same.

After discharge, the Alumni Opportunity program keeps the door open with scholarships, preferential access to counseling, and community resources.
